Nestlé

Our 2021 Annual Progress Report reviews the activities, outcomes and impacts of the Nestlé Cocoa Plan under our three pillars of Better Farming, Better Lives and Better Cocoa. We also outline our innovative income accelerator program (IAP).

Better Farming

  • Over 90 000 farmers were trained in good agricultural practices (GAPs), including pruning, pest and disease control, weeding, shade management and harvest management.

  • A third of farmers (33%) were considered to have adopted at least four GAPs (including pruning) to an acceptable standard.

  • 44% of farmers had adopted pruning, i.e. cutting back unproductive branches to boost the cocoa tree’s overall yield and resilience.

Better Lives

  • To prevent and address child labor risks, the Child Labor Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS) cumulatively supported 156 974 children in Côte d’Ivoire since its launch (up from 127 550 in 2020).

  • The CLMRS also benefitted 2 809 children in Ghana (up from 2 399 in 2020).

  • Over 7 000 children reported no longer engaging in child labor at the two most recent follow-up visits across Côte d’Ivoire (6 307 children) and Ghana (738 children).

Better Cocoa

  • In 2021, the Nestlé Cocoa Plan expanded to cover 152 236 farming families (up from 124 053 in 2020).

  • In 2021, 198 000 tonnes of cocoa were sourced via the Nestlé Cocoa Plan, meaning the percentage of Nestlé’s total cocoa sourced through the plan rose to 50.6% (compared to 48% in 2020).

  • We made notable progress towards our Forest Positive strategy, including our drive to achieve deforestation-free cocoa by 2025. Though overviewed in our Annual Progress Report, on this specific point more detailed information is available in our Towards Forest Positive Cocoa Progress Report 2022.

Income Accelerator Program

  • We launched the pilot of our income accelerator program in Côte d’Ivoire, which aims to help both close the gap to a living income and protect children. The decision to further scale this program was announced in early 2022.

The data for our 2021 Annual Progress Report was collected from our suppliers and partners. Child labor data was provided by the International Cocoa Initiative across 50 181 cocoa farms. Rainforest Alliance performed an impact survey on a representative sample of 739 farms across Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana.
