Nestlé
Our 2020 Progress Report details the activities, outcomes and impacts of the Nestlé Cocoa Plan under our three pillars of Better Farming, Better Lives and Better Cocoa.
Better Farming
- In 2020, the Nestlé Cocoa Plan expanded to cover 124,000 farmers
- 87% of farmers surveyed had attended at least one training session over the past 12 months. 40 female farmers were selected for specialized training to become “lighthouses” of best practice for their local communities
- A total of 171 groups pruned 7,136 hectares in 2020, a seven-fold increase on 2019 and led to a three- to four-fold yield increase on pruned plots
- Continuing our Forest Positive strategy, we have mapped over 75% of the 120,000 cocoa farms we source from in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana to identify areas at risk of deforestation. In 2020, we distributed more than 669,000 forest and fruit trees to support reforestation and encouraged planting of shade trees to protect cocoa crops from excessive heat and rainfall and improve yields. We are on track to plant over 1 million trees by 2021/22
Better Lives
- In 2020, the Child Labor Monitoring and Remediation System benefited 127,550 children in Côte d’Ivoire
- We built or refurbished four schools during the year, and increased our number of bridging classes, for a cumulative total of 53 schools and 131 bridging classes
Better Cocoa
- In 2020, cocoa tonnage increased to over 200,000 tonnes for the first time, towards our goal of sourcing 100% of cocoa for Nestlé confectionery through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan by 2025
The data for this report is collected from our suppliers and partners, while Rainforest Alliance performs an impact survey on a sample of farmers. In 2020 the impact survey covered a representative sample of 1,269 out of 80,000 farmers in the NCP in Cote d’Ivoire. This work helps us understand our performance, track progress and course correct. In 2021, we will extend this coverage to more sourcing origins.
