As part of Nestlé’s commitment to creating shared value for all, the Nestlé Cocoa Plan is bringing safe water and sanitation facilities to the cocoa growing communities connected to its supply chain. The Sustainable Water Sanitation and Hygiene Project is in partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and implemented by the Ghana Red Cross Society. The project provides sanitation facilities (latrines), clean water and hygiene education to Nestlé Cocoa Plan communities. Phase one of the project started in 2016 and ended in 2019, reaching 76,000 people.
Phase two has been running since 2019 and is expected to end in 2021, with the goal of reaching about 50,000 people. This phase of the project will impact 12 communities where mechanized boreholes and cashless water vending systems will improve access to clean water.
The new solar panel pump technology (upgraded from a handle) includes back-up grid power, making water access more reliable and easier for the people who need it.
